Project Proposal

For my final year project, I have written, composed and produced a concept EP that lyrically considers the mental challenges that many people face day-to-day.

Aims and Objectives

I have written 30 minutes of material, equating to 6 songs that takes you through a journey of how anxiety can affect you throughout life and the process of overcoming these struggles.

The sonic journey begins light with a slight major feel, but as it progresses gets darker in the lyrics and music as the topics get darker and deeper in meaning. At the end of the EP the songs become major again, as if the listener is coming out of the other side of the journey, overcoming the darkness, representing the lifting of anxiety.

  • ‘When the Blue Sky Fogged’ is about the transition from being young into adulthood and the difficulties that it presents.

  • ‘Night Terrors’ describes horrible nightmares and thoughts that come to you late at night and prevent you from sleeping.

  • ‘Feed the Weekend’ is about struggling with procrastination and facing many work deadlines repeatedly, like a cycle through every week.

  • ‘My Doomsday’ depicts what it’s like to experience health anxiety and the overwhelming feeling that something is always wrong with you.

  • ‘The System’ is about how life appears to be a non-stop conveyer belt of work however the mindset shiKs halfway through the song to more positive and focuses on how there is much more to life than work.

  • ‘Live Outside’ describes how going outside for a day on a walk can drastically shift a person’s mood and mindset and concludes the EP on a positive note.

The genre of the EP is Alternative/ Indie Pop which I have chosen carefully as these genres of music are usually softer on the ear and relaxing to listen to in comparison to Rock or Pop genres. I utilised my classical guitar training and vocals with a complimentary balance of synthesizers, sampling and production techniques to create a ‘soft-sound’, resulting in the EP being somewhat a ‘remedy’ for anxiety from the listeners perspective due to its calming effect, also reinforced via arrangement and overall style. I wrote all instrumentation parts myself either through MIDI or on Muse Score, however I cannot play drums and bass myself so I contacted my peers and asked them to play these parts in the recording process for the songs ‘Feed the Weekend’ and ‘My Doomsday’. I varied the use of live recorded drums and programmed drums and bass in a way that still makes the EP cohesive but also gives variation to individual songs and shows a range of skill sets.

Lyricism is a key element to the EP, and I wanted my lyrics to be cleverly deep rooted as opposed to surface level and ‘obvious’ and I wanted the lyrical content to be backed up through the musical composition. I lyrically dove deeper into the struggles that most people experience through life and I gained perspective of this through informally speaking with friends/ family about what affects them and through reading library resources about the topic, eg. ‘Illusion and reality: the meaning of anxiety’ by David Smail.

Musical Influences and Research

An alternative artist known as ‘The Japanese House’ inspired my vision for the EP. They have a unique vocal style and overall production style that is smooth and soft, for example as heard in the song ‘Follow my Girl’ (2019, track 6). My vocal harmonies and melodies are inspired by The Japanese House and other similar artists like Bon Iver (Wash. (2011, track 7)), Imogen Heap (Hide and Seek (2005, track 5)) and Phoebe Bridgers (Garden Song (2020, track 2)) who all use close harmony, interesting melodies and have soK vocal timbres, similar to my voice.

As I wanted my lyrics to have a certain level of depth, listening to the podcast ‘Sodajerker’ gave me an insight into songwriters that inspire me (eg. Paul McCartney and Paul Simon) as they are interviewed about their creative writing process. If I reached a creative block in my writing, I listened to other artists’ methods and tried out different useful techniques to help me progress.

When producing the EP, I revised the PowerPoints from Desktop Music Production years 1 and 2 and the YouTube videos posted by Mark Mynett for the Studio Production module in year 2. These resources contain essential information for mixing and producing that I utilised to create a well-crafted EP, for example, creating unique synthesisers, recording and mixing vocals professionally all techniques that were useful to me for my project.

Work Plan

I initially wrote the songs in my own time and recorded rough demos using Logic Pro at home using my interface and condenser microphone and completed this before December, end of Term 2, giving me enough time to put thought into each song without falling behind time wise.

I also used a Zoom H6 recorder to create a small sample bank so that in the production stage, I could sample the sounds gathered when they fit well with the song and to reinforce lyrical content.

In term 2 I progressed by using the EMS and Greenroom studios and facilities available to professionally record, produce and mix all the songs to completion on Logic Pro as this is the DAW I am most advanced with using.

I recorded my vocals first to a rough demo incase there was a lockdown as I needed the soundproof space in the studio to produce professional sounding vocals.

Throughout both terms I documented my creative process and progress in my notebook to gather ideas for writing my reflective report.

Project Report

‘Brain Washed’ is a concept EP, inspired by the anxieties that most people experience throughout life. I aimed to write relatable songs so that the listener can experience a journey exploring the different topics but eventually making it out the other side as the EP concludes on a positive note. In recent years, especially after the pandemic, people have become more conscious of mental health. Following conversations I have shared with family and peers about ‘life stresses’ I was inspired to write and produce an EP that many people could connect personally with, and each song’s lyrical meaning is enhanced by the music that I have composed to accompany it. Its consistent indie-pop / alternative genre gives the EP a ‘soft sound’ and has a mixture of acoustic and electronic components, depending on the song’s lyrical content

During the writing stage of ‘Brain Washed,’ the influences behind each song varied from personal experience to articles I read online, for example, the Mental Health Foundation describes how daily physical exercise such as walking is beneficial to mental health (Mental Health Foundation, 2022), which inspired the meaning behind ‘Live Outside’ in which I wrote the lyrical content when I was on walks to immerse myself in this headspace.

I wrote all the songs before I began producing any of them, which upon reflection I believe I should have done alongside the writing process, as mixing all the songs at once became tedious, and I grew tired of the songs at various points in this stage.

When recording the acoustic components, I utilised spaces provided by the university by recording all vocals in the soundproofed studios with a condenser microphone and recording live drums for ‘Feed the Weekend’ and ‘My Doomsday’ in the Greenroom Studios. The acoustic guitar and bass were recorded in the studios through DI, and I later added amps to them within the DAW. My set up for vocal and drums recordings can be seen in Figures 1, 2 and 3.

When mixing the live drums and bass, I often referred to lecture content from the ‘Mixing Essentials’ module (Mynett, 2019) in my first year to help achieve a professional standard mix and when creating various synths within Logic Pro X, I drew inspiration from ‘Desktop Music Production’ lectures (Herbst, 2019) detailing how to use LFOs and various techniques to shape synths. This content helped me experiment and create synths that complimented my music.

My aims when mastering the EP were to add brightness, clarity, and presence however reflecting on this, I feel I may have slightly lost some of the low end on the tracks however this did not impact the final result and I am satisfied with the concluding sound of the EP.

When arranging the songs, I carefully decided which would be more acoustic and which would have more electronic elements. ‘Night Terrors’ is a vulnerable song about insomnia/ nightmares so I knew it needed to be musically ‘stripped back’ so the lyrical content could be digested by the listener without the music being a distraction.

‘Live Outside’ is about nature, so it was appropriate for it to be acoustic featuring layered acoustic guitar and string parts, however, ‘The System’ and ‘My Doomsday,’ (whilst still having acoustic elements), contain synthesizers and experimental production techniques as they mention ‘machines’ and ‘screens’ so they should have a futuristic feel.

Initially, I wanted ‘When the Blue Sky Fogged’ to be acoustic, however after trial and error I realised that it suited an electronic feel, as the song details the ‘bubble’ of being young bursting as you enter adulthood and begin to face difficulties in life, so I wanted it to have a ‘floaty’ feel which was achieved when using synths and components within the DAW.

When composing vocal harmonies for each song, I was inspired by ‘The Japanese House’ who famously uses lots of layered harmony lines, creating lush soundscapes (for example in her album ‘Good at Falling’ (2019)) and I wanted to achieve something similar. I looped certain sections of vocal lines and recorded multiple harmonies on top of each other, picking the takes that suited best for the song.

In ‘Night Terrors’ a large choral ‘Ooooh’ can be heard as if it is being sung by many people at a concert and this style of vocal is influenced by Coldplay, for example in songs like ‘Higher Power’ (2021) and ‘Orphans’ (2019). A lead guitar line inspired by Coldplay’s ‘In my place’ (2002) can be heard in ‘Feed the Weekend’ as they are both high pitched, simple, and reverberant.

I was also inspired by the vocal production in the song ‘Gold’ by Kiiara which chops up vocal lines to create a repeated idea that results in the song’s memorable nature, so I used this technique in ‘Feed the Weekend’, a song about procrastination and constant work-deadlines so this repeated vocal idea adds to the intended repetitiveness of the song.

The lyrical content is reinforced through the accompanying music by word-painting and sound effects at various moments. For example, In the opening song ‘When the Blue Sky Fogged’ the lyrics ‘time refused to stop’ are accompanied by a fast-paced ticking clock sample (Williams, date unknown).

My Doomsday is about experiencing health anxiety and as it is the longest song on the EP it was necessary to utilise the sound design to keep the song interesting for a prolonged amount of time. I recorded samples of my phone ringing, dialing, and hanging up to be used as a representation of ringing the doctors multiple times, and an echoey church bell sample (mixkit, date unknown) is used to reinforce the lyrics ‘Ring the bells out loud’.

‘Live Outside’ describes being on a walk, therefore birds can be heard at the start of the song which I recorded in my back garden with a Zoom H5 microphone to set the ambience of the song.

It contains the lyrics: ‘sensations in my body flower’ in which I layered multiple harmonies over the word ‘flower’ to word paint a flower blossoming as shown in Figure 4.

Upon reflection I believe I could have further achieved a ‘Concept EP’ if I had made each song transition into each other consistently, making it into one continuous listening journey, however I feel ‘Brain Washed’ is a cohesive mini-album that successfully creates a journey of emotions as each topic in each song is explored.
