Time Machine

My interpretation and sound design of a time machine

Commentary:

My thought process

I wanted my time machine to sound old, rusty and used, almost like you have discovered it from decades ago.

Journey of the listener…

As you unlock the time machine, two large metal doors slide apart and you walk in. You tap the year you wanted to travel to into the panel and the doors close behind you.

With the warning of 4 alarms, the machines airy engines power on and time travel begins. A large metal dial above your head whirls around in circles as the world and time itself is warping outside the machine. Once the machine brings you to the correct year, the machine powers off and the large metal doors reopen.

Editing and Mixing

I combined 3 different lock samplesto make a thicker sound.

  • Pitch shifted ‘beeps’ to make it sound like unique numbers are being pressed.

  • 3 oven sounds overlapping to create a rich airy sound.

  • Binaural panning with automation in circles for the metal whirling.
